This project consisted of the demolition of two one-way overpass structures that carried traffic over active railroad lines, and the construction of a new 289-foot-long, 71-foot-wide bridge encompassing two traffic lanes in each direction along with new 6’4″ cyclist and pedestrian walkways on each side. The new bridge was constructed to be longer than the old bridge to reduce the steepness of the span’s incline.
The Freya St. Bridge project was designed by WSDOT to demolish and replace the pair of existing side-by-side bridges with a single structure over the BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) railroad lines just north of Broadway Avenue as part of a six year initiative, the Freya Street Corridor Completion project. These other projects included; the new Freya Way Bridge; completion of the Thor/Freya St. Couplet; rehabilitation of Freya St. from Sprague to Alki avenues, and realignment of Broadway Ave., which moved its connection with Freya St. to Alki Ave.
With construction taking place over a fully operational train track, Garco had to coordinate with BNSF a working schedule that accommodated the train schedules, while ensuring that all safety requirements were adhered to by both WSDOT and BNSF.
The $7 million project began August 1, 2009, and was completed ahead of schedule in May 2010, opening just in time for Memorial Day weekend travelers. The project was funded by federal Bridge Replacement money, the Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board, and City of Spokane.
