To meet the growing needs of the communities BNSF Railway serves, the company built a second rail bridge over Lake Pend O’Reille adjacent to the existing rail bridge, as well as new bridges over Sand Creek and Bridge Street in Sandpoint. The upgrades help reduce congestion and move their current freight traffic and future volumes more efficiently; this benefits all the products they carry and the passenger trains that run on the main line.

Ames Construction was awarded this project as the Prime Contractor. Garco was a key subcontractor performing the following scopes of work:

  • Complete Construction of Bridge 3.0 over Bridge Street
  • Steel Pile Group Bracing
  • Installation of Precast Concrete Pier Caps
  • Furnish & Erect Structural Steel Spans
  • Furnish & Erect Handrail, Walkways, Utility Support & Pier Access Miscellaneous Steel

After completing the new bridges and tying in the traffic lanes, additional modifications were performed on the existing rail bridge, including the removal and replacement of eight complete steel spans. The new spans were pre-assembled on barges, floated out, and lifted into place as complete units. Garco performed all structural steel assembly and erection.
