Garco & Staff Continue Pledged Support for Spokane County United Way

By December 3, 2020 No Comments

For more than 40 years, Garco has been a supporter of the Spokane County United Way. Since 2000 (the year the current donor software dates back to), Garco and staff donations have raised $535,585. Each year Garco offers staff members have the opportunity to make a one-time donation or elect to have donations done as automatic payroll deductions. For each employee that participates, the company provides a matching donation dollar for dollar. Garco staff and company donations combined with thousands of others’ gifts in our community has enabled United Way to invest more than $20 million in our community over the past 10 years. This financial investment is used to create safe homes free of child abuse, neglect, and domestic violence, increase graduation rates and opportunities for youth, and increase people’s financial stability to prevent hunger and homelessness.

This may seem like an impossible dream when Spokane County’s child abuse, neglect and domestic violence rates are nearly double the state average. Over 3,000 students experiencing homelessness each year, along with the fact that before COVID 35% of people in our community were already struggling living pay-check-to-paycheck. Spokane County United Way has been creating dreams for decades and serving our community since 1921. Still, there’s more work to be done, especially given the devastation we’ve experienced this past year.

Spokane County United Way Community Outreach and Development Manager Drew Curry shares that, “payroll deduction is our most popular form of payment. It’s efficient: lower fundraising costs mean more money is invested in our community. It’s convenient: you decide what to contribute and it comes right out of your paycheck a little at a time. It’s secure and confidential: your payroll deduction is handled by your employer and automatically ends should you leave your job for any reason. Contributors may also write a check, give cash or use a credit card with no additional charge to make their gift to Spokane County United Way.”

For 2021, Garco staff and officers, along with the matching company funds, have committed $54,208 to the Spokane County United Way. Garco President Clancy Welsh shares, “We are proud of the commitment our employees make each year to support the goals of the Spokane County United Way.  2020 has been a challenging year for all of us. To see that our staff continues to support the needs of so many in our community, even in such a difficult year, is humbling. The need for programs supported by United Way are greater than ever. To be able to maintain the same level of support that we have provided in years past just shows the quality and generosity of the team we are so fortunate to have at Garco.”

Garco Project Administrator Deborah Seagle shares, “I’ve worked for Garco for almost 15 years and one of my favorite things about the company is it’s generosity to our community. Company leaders encourage each employee to give back to the community, as they are able, both monetarily and through volunteering. One of the organizations Garco supports is the Spokane County United Way. The United Way is crucial to our community for helping those in need, especially during these difficult times of 2020. I’m thankful to be part of the Garco team and the ability it provides me to give back to our community.”

The total Garco donations could:

  • Provides 83 child / children with one month of full-time quality childcare for pre-school aged children, or
  • Provides 83 week(s) of street outreach to homeless youth, or
  • Provides 104 child / children a year of club activities and one week at summer camp, or
