What’s it like being an intern at Garco? Well, we’re going to show you! We’ve started interviewing our interns to find out what the experience is like for them and what they are learning about the industry and Garco that will help them as they move forward with their careers.
Meet Chris Carey. He’s been interning with Garco for three summers and will be a senior at Washington State University this fall. During his first summer at Garco Chris worked in the safety department, getting to visit nearly all the job sites during the summer. For his second summer, Chris worked primarily in the office learning and gaining experience with estimating, O&Ms, and also worked on the Northern Quest RV Park attending Owner’s meetings and assisting with project closeout. This summer he has continued to work in the office with estimating, as well as working at the Shadle Park Library addition project.
Before college Chris had no experience in the construction world, but throughout middle school and high school he worked on a farm in Coulee City, WA. He loved being outdoors and seeing the results of the physical work he performed. This satisfaction of seeing a job completed prompted Chris to find a career path that would allow him to work outside, tangibly see the results of his efforts and be in a business environment as well. Chris says, “Construction Management seemed like the perfect fit and I have loved it so far with all my experiences at Garco.”
His internship experiences have taught him so many valuable things he didn’t learn in school. He says, “Being able to take the broad knowledge I gained in school and apply it to real life applications has deepened my understanding of the industry and how the construction climate works.”
For other students considering a career path in the A/E/C industry, Chris offers the following insight, “It is hard work and seems stressful at times, but it allows for the excitement of solving a lot of different problems and will be a never-ending learning experience. There is a lot of innovation and new products to learn about. I don’t think I will ever get bored of doing the same thing in this industry.”
What are the most exciting things about Chris’ internship at Garco? He shares, “Getting to be a part of some of the big projects we bid, getting to walk all the job sites for the safety department and getting to see all the different phases of construction, project challenges, and flying in the plane was definitely a cool experience.”
We are glad you got to gain this experience with the Garco team Chris!
