Freya Street Bridge

Garco Construction was awarded the Freya Street Bridge Project in June of 2009 and construction commenced in on August 3rd of that year.  The project replaces two existing bridges that span over three Burlington Northern Sante Fe (BNSF) railroad tracks.  The existing bridges consisted of a cast-in-place structure that was built in 1928 and a precast girder bridge that was built alongside the existing bridge in 1971. The project scope included demolition of the two existing bridge structures, construction 18,000sf of structural earth wall, placement of 22,000cy of gravel borrow, installation of  new storm sewer, 2000cy of concrete paving, 2500sy of new sidewalk and the construction of the new bridge.  The bridge substructure consisted of one abutment wall at the south end of the bridge and four piers (built with crash walls).  The superstructure consisted of four spans (each with ten girders) of thin-flanged bulbed-tee precast girders with the longest span being just over 125 feet.  The bridge deck ranged from 8.25 inches thick to 12.5 inches thick. 

 

Currently the project is on schedule for an estimated completion in July 2010.
