Weaving the past into the future
Spokane companies will integrate tribes' culture into new school
By Michael Guilfoil
Spokesman Review
Spokane's ALSC Architects and Garco Construction have won a design competition that could impact the way tribes nationwide approach major projects.
The Colville Confederated Tribes recently chose ALSC and Garco to design and build the $18 million Paschal Sherman Indian School near Omak, about three hours northwest of Spokane.
The new school will accommodate 270 students. A separate dormitory will house 100 students. The contract also includes a fire station, bus barn and maintenance building.
The two-story school, designed by ALSC principa Scott Whitesitt, incorporates traditional tribal iconography with the latest energy-saving techniques.
