Garco 2010 community service project a great success
Garco’s 2010 community service project in Great Falls, MT was a great success do in no small part to the generous contributions of many of our suppliers and the volunteers who gave up a beautiful spring Saturday to help accomplish the tasks.
The city of Great Falls is in the same financial boat as many other communities in our area and in order to continue to provide for the necessary services to its citizens it has had to reduce or even eliminate many items in their yearly budget that some would consider luxuries. One area that has taken a particularly hard hit is the Parks and Recreation Department and consequently the youth baseball complexes.
Garco chose two baseball complexes for the project and after meeting with the presidents of the Babe Ruth League and the American Legion League a list of wants was prepared and the necessary resources were marshaled to accomplish these items.
For the Babe Ruth League complex the request was to complete a two story press box/concession stand. The volunteers installed a new metal roof, new siding, cornice and trim, a changing room for the game officials, new wiring and lighting, wall ceiling insulation, new cabinets and countertops, and the siding and trim was painted.
At the American Legion complex 450’ of fence was removed and replaced, a materials storage bin was constructed for the grounds crew to store the sand, granite and topsoil used on the field, approximately 100 yards of topsoil was screened for contaminates and relocated, the parking lot was graded and leveled, and two side dump loads of trash, busted concrete, old fencing and posts and general debris was hauled to the local landfill. Mother Nature cooperated fully and everyone involved with the project had a great time. Garco gave each volunteer a company tee shirt and hat as well as providing lunch and soft drinks for the team.
